As with many commodity driven markets, product acceptability can change frequently. Recycling is no different and changes are being made to deal with stricter broker guidelines and markets that are overloaded.
With this in mind the Ashland County Recycling Center located at 1270 Middle Rowsburg Road, Ashland, and all of the drop-off locations, will no longer be accepting: plastic grocery bags, shrink wrap or plastic film.
Many plastic processing plants do not allow these types of plastic because it can get tangled up in equipment and cause serious issues with down time and repairs.
In addition to changing materials accepted, the Ashland County Recycling Center has many drop-off areas throughout the county, mostly in rural locations, with a roll-off container(s) placed at these various sites. Residents will be able to dump their recycling bins/boxes into the recycling tubs loose and reuse the bag or bin again. No materials should be left outside of or on the ground around the recycling tub, this is considered littering and is against the law.
The Recycling Center is making this change due to the increased disposal cost of having to send this material to the landfill, an average of 20-21 yards a week, equivalent to one of our recycling roll-off containers, is now having to be landfilled instead of recycled. Added man power needed to open all bags containing recycling adds to this increase in cost.
Other items that should not be put in the tubs at drop off locations or brought to the Recycling Center are as follows:
? No household hazardous waste items such as paint, chemicals, tar, etc.
? No glass, food waste or compost, Styrofoam cups and containers
? No needles and other medical waste
? No prescription medications
Please remember the rural drop-off locations are for recycling only.
The recycling center does not accept trash or garbage at the center or any drop-off location, as it will contaminate the whole load of recycling.
The changes listed above only apply to the residents of Ashland County who use the Ashland County Recycling program at rural locations or drop off recycling at the Recycling Center on Middle Rowsburg Road.
If you are a City of Ashland resident with curbside recycling and have questions, you should contact the City of Ashland Sanitation Department for recycling guidelines and acceptability of materials. The City Sanitation Department provides its own recycling service to residents and might not accept the same materials as the County Recycling Center.
