Inspired by a wedding reception held at the church, members of the Maple Grove United Methodist Church are inviting the public to experience the magic of Clintonville while raising money for the Whetstone Community Center renovations.

The church, 7 W. Henderson Road, will host Magic in the Moonlight at 7 p.m. Aug. 23. The event, to be held in the church's courtyard, will feature live music, dinner cooked by local chef and Clintonville resident Jim McDaniels and magic tricks.

Cathy Davis, who organized the event for the church, said members decided to host the event after a wedding reception was held on the lawn last summer.

"They had round tables and candlelight," Davis said, and the church is looking to recreate that magical atmosphere for Clintonville residents.

McDaniels will prepare a salad made with Clintonville-grown produce, herb-roasted chicken, parsleyed new potatoes and a sautéed vegetable blend. Church members will provide dessert.

During the event, diners will be entertained by Maple Grove's own New Leaf Jazz Combo, with Clintonville singer Janice Blocher, who will perform the works of Ira and George Gershwin. A jazz trio from Ohio State also is scheduled to perform.

Church members who know a little magic will entertain guests with tricks, said Miriam Bowers Abbott, another organizer.

"It's more of a one-on-one interaction than a performance," Abbott said. "That will be the kind of magic we have up our sleeves."

Abbott also will put together a fully set table, complete with a table cloth, which guests will be challenged to pull away from the table without disturbing the plates and glasses.

"The table-cloth pull is the event for guests to work their own magic," she said.

The cost to attend the dinner is $12, which will go to support the community's efforts to raise $500,000 for the Whetstone Community Center renovations.

Reservations for the dinner, along with payments, are due by Monday, Aug. 18. Reservations can be made by calling the church at (614) 262-1163.

Davis said the event will be a chance for Clintonville residents to mingle with neighbors while raising money for the community center and enjoying the night air.

"We're hoping for music, good food and a little bit of magic," Davis said.
