Join the Red Nose Children's Run
Lace up your big old floppy clown ... uh, running shoes, put on your red nose, and head out to the third annual Nationwide Better Health Columbus Marathon Ringling Bros. & Barnum & Bailey Red Nose Children's Run.
Run length varies by age and there will also be a wheelchair division. A real Ringling Bros. clown will keep the runners laughing the entire way.
In addition to early registration online at www.columbusmarathon.com, children can register on Friday, October 17 at the Nationwide Better Health Columbus Marathon Health & Fitness Expo, Hall D at the Greater Columbus Convention Center (400 N. High St.) from noon to 7 p.m. Registration will open at the Red Nose Run Activity Expo on Saturday, October 18 at 10 a.m. at Franklin Park Adventure Center.
If you can run and clown around at the same time, then wear your best clown costume and compete for great prizes, including tickets to see Ringling Bros. & Barnum & Bailey at Nationwide Arena and the chance to be a guest clown in the show. Join in the fun on Saturday, October 18.
Experience and explore the great outdoors
Grab a camera, pack a picnic lunch and head out with your family to one of the 15 Metro Parks to experience the wonders of the season. Throughout the month of October you can get a front row seat to Mother Nature's greatest show--the annual arrival of fall color.
Watch as green leaves turn into brilliant or muted shades of gold, orange, red and purple and flutter to the ground as you hike or bike along the many miles of trails. With more than 140 miles of trails, you can pick one that's just right for you and your family.
Enhance your memory with music
Memory and how to finely tune one's memory is a subject that seldom becomes uninteresting. Our fascination with verbal and visual retention begins when we are newborns and desire our mother's attention. We learn to recognize the difference between her voice and touch, from that of someone else. As toddlers, we remember to watch for behavioral cues and events that could change our level of satisfaction. In preschool, we observe that by memorizing more complicated sequences, one day we will be able to do what our parents are doing.
Music lessons have a profound effect on memory. Studies show that children who take music lessons have a more developed verbal memory than children who do not. Music lessons prepare students for life in other ways as well: Self-motivation, discipline and follow-through are skills we all need.
