BUZZ TERM: Tiger Mom

WHAT IT MEANS: "Tiger Mom" describes a parenting style that emphasizes the role of the parent in providing constant structure for the child's schedule, activities and discipline. The tiger parent is hands-on, supervising all activities and implementing a regimented and strict routine. Tiger parents believe that they are responsible for providing the tools for lifelong success, and that without parental intervention the child would naturally choose less strict and intense schedules. Tiger parenting is often contrasted with more lenient Western styles, which can favor bolstering a child's independence and self-esteem. A tiger parent might require 4+ hours of practice on a musical instrument per day, and would be present to provide constant instruction, feedback and criticism.

WHERE IT COMES FROM: The 2011 book, Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother by Amy Chua. Chua, a law professor, wrote her book to describe her traditional Chinese parenting style and its clash with American culture.
