Team Chipmunk, the upcycled children's clothing line that costume designer Liz Bourgeois started in her Clintonville home three years ago, is opening its first retail location in early February. The 1,200-square-foot space is located south of the Columbus Commons (281 S. Third St.) next to 7 Studios, a yoga studio. The Team Chipmunk store's neighbor is significant as both places are winners of an annual Columbus City Council competition called KickStart, where local businesses compete for free downtown retail space and tenant improvement money. In addition to handmade, vintage inspired children's clothing, the new store (open Thursdays through Sundays) will feature jewelry and accessories, vintage shoes and boots, newborn gift sets packaged in cute glassware and Bourgeois' newest venture, Cloth, a women's dress line also designed with upcycled materials. Interestingly, the Team Chipmunk seamstresses' backroom workshop will be visible from the shopping section of the store.

While you're downtown, check out the hidden-gem metal Free Books stand in front of Zen Cha Tea Salon on Gay Street. Better yet, bring some books to swap in for the novels you take.

Another giving opportunity for you: Community Shares of Mid Ohio launched the Give Card in December. The Give Card is like a gift card for charity organizations. You can put however much money you want on the card and your gift recipient can select one of more than 50 local nonprofits to give the money to. Check it out at givecard.net.
