After the holiday season is over, families still can visit a winter wonderland in Loudonville.

The city, about 80 miles northeast of Columbus, is welcoming the New Year with its annual Mohican Winter Fest celebration. The three-day event, which runs Jan. 13-15, features a variety of family-friendly entertainment, including ice sculptures, fire spinning and model trains, said Georgia Kaufmann, executive director of the Mohican Visitors Bureau in Loudonville.

"It gets people out during the winter," she said. "It can get a little gray in the winter, but we want people to see that there's still a lot of fun to be had."

Events are coordinated by various organizations in several locations around the city. Visitors can watch ice sculptors perform their craft during public demonstrations. They also can walk around Main Street and Central Park to view sculptures created by award-winner Aaron Costic and other artists from Elegant Ice Creations.

Locals will perform fire poi, or fire spinning, shows in front of the sculptures, creating an exciting "fire and ice combo," Kaufmann said.

Model railroad enthusiasts will host a Train Expo throughout the weekend at the Loudonville Fair Event Center.

Mohican State Park will host a winter hike that is free and open to the public. It's a chance to view the park's trails in the off-season, Kaufmann said.

"A lot of studies have shown that (a way) to help fight off those winter blues is to be active. Be involved," she said. "In other words, get outside and have some fun."
