Automaker Donates to Nationwide Children's Hospital

A $1 million gift from Honda to Nationwide Children’s Hospital will create a new center focused on pediatric mobility.

The Honda Center for Gait Analysis and Mobility Enhancement will be the first such facility to provide comprehensive gait and spine motion analysis as well as sports performance and injury-prevention programs, according to an announcement from Nationwide Children’s. The center also will focus on developing prosthetics and wheelchairs.

According to the hospital, the center will benefit patients with cerebral palsy, spina bifida, spinal-cord injuries, neuromuscular diseases, missing limbs and other mobility-limiting conditions. Research opportunities will be offered in pediatric sports medicine, injury prevention and surgical rehabilitation.

The donation was announced June 20 at Nationwide Children’s. ASIMO (Advanced Step Innovative Mobility), Honda’s humanoid robot, performed demonstrations for patients.

Honda previously donated $750,000 to the hospital to create “Determination Way,” a hands-on simulated community where rehabilitation patients learn how to manage daily tasks.
