Model trains, Halloween events and more

This weekend is the last hurrah for Halloween haunts, but there also are several other notable events on tap around Central Ohio (and beyond).

Here a few worth checking out:

Model Railroad Days keeps chugging at COSI through Oct. 29. The annual event includes displays from local model railroad groups and is included with admission. For more information, read our archive story. Topiaries at the Conservatory: Wild Wonders comes to an end Oct. 29. The exhibition of life-size, floral-form animals opened at Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Gardens in May. While you’re there, check out thousands of mums, plants and pumpkins as part of Harvest Blooms, on display through Nov. 12. A trick-or-treat event for kids will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 28.  This month’s installment of Hoot: Films, Music & More at Gateway Film Center focuses on Halloween. The family series features activities, short films, live music from The Shazzbots and dancing. The event begins at 10 a.m. Oct. 28. Admission is free for those who donate a canned good for The Open Shelter.  Family Day takes place Oct. 28 at the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force near Dayton. Visitors can come in costume and participate in free Halloween-themed activities, including learning about air vortices, density and sound waves. Games, a scavenger hunt, storytimes and crafts also will be offered.
