Ideas for donating excess Halloween treats

Already dreading the sugar rush your little goblins will partake in during trick or treat—and for days afterward?

No worries. Some area dentists can help through the Halloween Candy Buyback program. The process is simple. Kids take unopened items to a registered site and exchange them for toys, toothbrushes, healthy treats or even cash. Volunteers then ship the candy to military personnel overseas.

Participating in the exchange also is a great way to give your little ones a lesson in community service. To find a participating location, go to halloweencandybuyback.com.

Another option: Operation Gratitude accepts donated candy, which it distributes to military troops and first responders. Operation Shoebox also gives donated candy to troops.

Some food banks take candy donations as well, but call before dropping off items to verify they accept sweets.
