A Central Ohio organization dedicated to reducing infant mortality is emphasizing the importance of safe sleep with a social media contest. Celebrate One is giving away five sleep sacks (basically a sleeveless wearable blanket) each week through Feb. 28 on its Facebook page. Pregnant women and new moms who live in Columbus can share a photo, tag the organization and use a special hashtag to enter. Check it out at facebook.com/celebrateone.
Zoombezi Bay will debut a new play area when it opens for the 2018 season. Otter Banks, located near the wave pool and the Sea Splash slide tower, will include three new pools (with 180,000 gallons of water), two enclosed body slides that drop riders 6 feet into a 10-foot pool below, an obstacle course, lounge chairs, a food kiosk and four family restrooms. The pools will feature a three-hoop basketball area, waterfalls, fountains and in-pool seating—a first for the water park. A new app developed by a local dad/author aims to boost busy parents' read-aloud time with their children. StorySnacker features original 160-word stories illustrated with time-lapse animation that can be read in 60 seconds. The app's co-creator, Erik Slangerup, is the father of five children and author of children's books “Dirt Boy” and “Monsterlicious.” The app, which includes three stories, is available for free through iTunes, with monthly and yearly subscription options for more content. Huntington National Bank has committed $2 million in funding over 10 years to Nationwide Children's Hospital. The grant, which the bank said is one of the largest gifts to a nonprofit in its history, will help support the Partners for Kids program, which serves at-risk and underserved youth in 34 Ohio counties in areas including behavioral health.
