Outdoor ice rink hosts public skating, CBJ practice

Winter sports enthusiasts will again be able to watch the Columbus Blue Jackets practice and take their own spin around an NHL-size ice rink in the Arena District.

Winter Park is returning for the fourth year, thanks to a partnership between the CBJ and Worthington Industries. The outdoor skating rink, which also will host several special events, is in McFerson Commons, 218 West St., across the street from Nationwide Arena.

Open skating will be offered in one-hour time slots Feb. 2-25. Hours vary daily, between 1-11 p.m. Skate rental is included in the cost, which is $10 for adults and $5 for kids (cash only). Spectators can sit in bleachers or watch from a heated tent. For more information and the schedule, go to nhl.com/bluejackets/fans/winter-park.

Other Winter Park events include:

Hockey fans can watch the Blue Jackets practice at noon Jan. 31, weather-permitting. Admission is free. Also, the team’s Feb. 2, 3 and 10 games will be shown on a video board near the rink.  The 5th Line 5K Race, open to runners and walkers, will be held Feb. 4. The CBJ is launching a new program called Get Out and Learn for children ages 5-8. A series of 12 free GOAL clinics will allow kids to try hockey and get a shirt and stick for their effort. The first event is Feb. 22 at Winter Park, with others to follow at OhioHealth Chiller Ice Rinks. The team has not yet announced details.
