When a child wants to become a vegetarian
WHO: Ana McCallister
WHEN: Aug. 13, 2018
THE BACKSTORY: It's usually pretty early on the journey into parenthood when you figure out that each child is an individual, with his or her own beliefs, outlook and personality. No matter how many kids you have, each will throw you a curveball at some point.
AnnMarie and Jeff McCallister of Worthington got a surprise from their youngest child, Ana, when at the tender age of 5 she declared she was going to be a vegetarian. The impetus: discovering that chicken nuggets came from real chickens.
In this month's Food and Nutrition section, Jeff writes about Ana's decision, which prompted some frantic research to make sure her new diet would be nutritionally sound. Seven years later, she's as committed—and healthy—as ever.
For our cover, photo editor Tim Johnson wanted more than just a standard portrait, so he went shopping for a basket and produce, which he gave to Ana. “She was really excited about eating it that night,” he said.
