NELSONVILLE – Kids and their families are invited to participate in a free Fishing Derby on Saturday, May 26 from 7 a.m. to noon at the Wayne National Forest Lamping Homestead Recreation Area in Monroe County.
Those 15 years of age and younger, accompanied by a parent or guardian, are invited to come out to Lamping Pond with their fishing rods, tackle boxes and bait to take part in the fishing derby, which includes a lunch of hot dogs and beverages. Derby registration will start at 7 a.m., with the fishing competition beginning at 7:30 a.m. Derby winners will be announced at noon.
The event is being held in partnership with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Division of Wildlife, the Monroe County Chapter of the Ohio Horseman’s Council and the Wayne National Forest.
In addition to the fishing competition, the Monroe County Chapter of the Ohio Horseman’s Council will have horse rides. Visitors can also camp for free, canoe on the pond, or hike on the scenic trails. Lamping Homestead Recreation Area is located off of State Route 537, just two miles from the National Forest Covered Bridge Scenic Byway (State Route 26) in Monroe County.
Participants should bring their own fishing rods, bucket, bait, and chairs. Extra fishing rods and bait will be available for children who do not have their own. All who attend are encouraged to dress appropriately for the weather, including bringing a hat and sunscreen.
