The Ohio Machine's latest youth lacrosse initiative, a Highlights podcast and a new escape room offering

The Ohio Machine has, for the second straight year, announced an initiative to expand access to the sport of lacrosse among Central Ohio youth.

Thanks to a grant from the Ohio Machine Lacrosse Foundation, in partnership with the Columbus Recreation and Parks Department, the new initiative will allow the CRPD to hire a seasonal employee to teach kids the game in community centers throughout the city. The effort builds on last summer’s Urban Lacrosse Initiative, in which 80 local youth received instruction from Ohio Machine players and coaches with a goal of diversifying local lacrosse participation.

If your family hasn’t hopped on the podcast train, you’re missing out on lots of cool stuff. One example: the new “Highlights Hangout” monthly podcast, courtesy of Highlights for Children Inc. with help from Tinkercast, the creators of the “Wow in the World” podcast from NPR.

In another example of the ever-evolving world of media, the free podcast is an audio twist on the print magazine, with stories, characters, jokes and more from the pages of Highlights.

There’s a new escape-room experience coming to Columbus. Escape Room USA is moving into the Yankee Trader building on High Street across from the Greater Columbus Convention Center.

The business aims to offer just as much fun as the building’s former occupant through six immersive escape experiences that are open to children ages 8 and older. (Note that all participants younger than 15 must attend with a parent or guardian, and anyone younger than 18 must have a waiver signed by a parent or guardian.)

The venue opened in late June. Find it online by searching Escape Room USA on Facebook.
