The annual Portage County Senior Celebration was held recently at the Northeast Ohio Medical University Education and Wellness Center in Rootstown with nearly 400 seniors in attendance.

The theme this year was "Homecoming" and many seniors as well as members of the planning committee were dressed in their Homecoming attire.

Awards were given to seniors who go above and beyond to make the lives of others better in Portage County. The recipient for exemplary female was Evelyn Peck, outstanding male went to Leon Jankowski, and the award for the Portage County couple went to Mr. and Mrs. Ken Pyles (in memory of Ken Pyles who passed away earlier this year).

A plaque was also awarded to an area professional who "really gives so much and cares for our seniors," and that went to Marilyn Johns of Prospect House.

Seniors waded through the many informational tables and then enjoyed a buffet meal. A "seniors of Portage County" slide show and music ran continuously and the seniors laughed to a fun comedy routine, courtesy of Mike Wilson from Scope Senior Services. In addition, there were many raffle prizes awarded to the group.

The event is possible through many hours of dedicated volunteers from The Portage Senior Services Network, as well as many donations and sponsorships from the community.
