Best Bets for January

It's a new year! 2014 is here, and with it comes plenty to do in and around Columbus. Check out some of the highlights.

TAT Ristorante di Famiglia

Jimmy Corrova has no intention of retiring. The 79-year-old owner of the East Side's TAT Ristorante di Famiglia still looks forward to coming to work.

Sock Snowman

Is it cold but snowless outside? Spend a wintery afternoon making these little snowman friends in the warm indoors! You can find most of the materials at home, and it's a great use for all those stray socks that have lost their mate.

Daft Burger

There is no fear entering this restaurant with kids. The atmosphere, somewhere between a Wendy's and a Flipside, provides an open space, easy-to-read menu and friendly service.

January 2014 Books for Kids

Jazzy in the Jungle, The Animal Book, Bo at Ballard Creek, The Coldest Girl in Coldtown and My Playhome Stores (app).

Fit for Free

We're the 32 percenters - that portion of Americans who, in January, pinkie-swear that they will get their financial houses in order, and lose all of that Christmas-cookie weight. About one-third of Americans make New Year's resolutions, and two of the most popular are losing weight and spending less/saving more money, according to Omnibus Research.

Ohio's quality-rating system gets an overhaul

For the past seven years, many Ohio parents have relied on a quality-rating system for childcare centers and preschools. The Step Up to Quality (SUTQ) system used a three-star system to rate these learning and care centers.

Finding Happy

Finding happy: It is, in the end, what we all are after, right? No matter culture, sex or income, it's the singular tie that binds.

Frills and other basics

Columbus arts educator, author and all-around inspiration Mimi Brodsky Chenfeld shares more of her wisdom about raising happy, healthy, creative children:

Zombie Time

At any given moment in the past two weeks, someone in my family is frantically collecting sunshine in order to grow plants that will prevent waves of zombies from invading our home. We cannot stop playing Plants vs. Zombies on the iPad.
