If you haven't made a New Year's Resolution yet, or even if you have, it's not too late to add one to the list. And this one is much easier than giving up sweets or promising to exercise or floss every day if you fail at those first resolutions.

Allstate Insurance wants you to make a pledge that every time you get behind the wheel of your car you keep your eyes on the road, both hands on the wheel, and all 10 fingers off the keypad on your cell phone.

According to Allstate, when you text you take your eyes off the road for an average of five seconds. If you're driving 55 mph, that's like driving the length of a football field with a blindfold on. Need more convincing?

• texting and driving is like driving after drinking four beers • if you text and drive you are 23 times more likely to have an accident • texting and driving causes accidents that kill an average of 11 teens EACH DAY • texting and driving results in 330,000 distracted driving injuries a year

These statistics are fueling Allstate's national “X the Text” campaign. The insurance company is holding events at schools and other community events in the hopes of educating both parents and their children about the dangers of texting while driving. Local Allstate Insurance Agent, Frank Lengal, is offering free Txtng Kills thumb bands to anyone interested in making this pledge. All you have to do is email him at: franklengal@allstate.com.
