With all the snow outdoors, kids can't resist the call of snowballs and sleds.

Playing outside in the winter is a great way for kids to get exercise and have fun. But it can be dangerous if kids head outdoors unprepared for the cold.

Nationwide Children's Hospital offers the following tips for playing it safe outside in the winter:

* Prevent frostbite by checking your kids mittens regularly to make sure that mittens are dry and warm and noses aren't too red. * Feed kids a snack before sending them out. The calories will give their bodies energy in the cold weather. * Use sunscreen. Snow can reflect up to 85 percent of the sun's ultra violet rays. * Dress kids in layers of clothes.
