If the hot weather has your children clamoring for you to fill an inflatable or portable pool, make sure you're prepared to play lifeguard.
A recent American Academy of Pediatric study of the portable pools found that they can lead to serious injuries and deaths.
The study, which appears in the July 2011 issue of Pediatrics, tracked 209 fatal and 35 nonfatal submersion cases reported from 2001 through 2009. Ninety-four percent involved children younger than 5 years old, 56 percent were male, and 73 percent took place in the child’s own yard, usually during the summer months.
The academy advises parents to closely watch their children and learn CPR.
