Downtown film fans celebrated the opening of Studio Movie Grill in the Arena District in January. And even with its myriad adult-crowd offerings - Brews-N-Views, anyone? - the dinner-and-a-movie theater hosts a lot of family-friendly events, too. Particularly noteworthy is a series of Special Needs screenings of movies that are free for children with special needs and their siblings; during these screenings the lights are left on and the sound is turned down to accommodate the audience. Call the theater (614-456-1298) to get a current listing of when these screenings are available.
A local gown and dress shop opened in the Beechwold area in February. Gowntastic (4699 N. High St.) carries special occasion staples including gowns for that all-important night of your teen's life: prom. In addition to its wide selection of tasteful dresses (but still stylish, girls!), the store exclusively carries Kiss Kiss Formal by Mary's Bridal. Visit gowntastic.com/prom-2014.html for a look at what is in stock before checking out the store.
The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium has been participating in One Million Actions for Planet Earth. The multi-city program encourages users to record their sustainable and eco-friendly activities to raise money from donors for the user's zoo conservation project of choice. To account for your kiddos' green actions through Earth Day (April 22) and help the program reach its goal, visit myactions.org/columbus.
Inspired in part by busy daddy duty with his 6-year-old daughter, Web Smith, the co-owner of menswear shop Mizzen + Main, worked with business partner Kevin Lavelle to develop the wrinkle-free, sweat-resistant fabric of their Blackman 2.0 dress shirt. Convenience meets style at the new store in other ways, too - try on the $125 shirt in the sleek Short North shop (772 N. High St., Suite 102) and the staff will then mail your purchases to your home that day.
