The story behind this month's cover design.
Who: You are looking at the lovely hands of Heather Weekley, Columbus Parent's former assistant editor and now the editor of Columbus Bride.
Where: The photo studios of the Dispatch Media Group in downtown Columbus.
When: Monday, July 6, 2015, in the middle of the afternoon. For once it was not thunderstorming out, as it had for the previous two cover shoots.
The backstory: Weekley and Columbus Parent editor Jane Hawes were having lunch and Hawes was bouncing around ideas for the August cover.
She mentioned what a cool and interesting story that writer Joel Oliphint had produced for the issue about "sharenting" (parents sharing information about their kids on social media). They remembered the last time Columbus Parent had featured a thing, rather than a face, on its cover - August 2010 when the magazine debuted its redesign.
And the cover thing then had also been an iPhone (though that time it was the hand of Hawes' son delivering a photo of an apple to the teacher's desk).
They decided this was another story best illustrated with an iPhone image. A few emojis and hashtags later, they had a cover concept! (Please also note the "accurate" timestamp: They had to set Hawes' phone to Hawaii time to make that happen.)
