The story behind this month's cover design.
Who: Luke Fickel, age 7
Where: The photo studio at the Columbus Dispatch building in downtown Columbus.
When: Early afternoon, November 5, 2015.
The backstory: Luke was the winner of our 2015 Win the Cover contest, his win coming from a combination of reader votes and the consensus of our team that, with a smile like that, he'd make a great cover model - and he did! He was also exceptionally quick at the job: From start to finish, his photo shoot probably took 15 minutes (and that included the change into his scarlet and grey top).
Luke arrived that day with his mom, Anne, and his 8-year-old brother Isaiah (who is better known as "Z"). The homeschooled Lewis Center kids were taking a break from their studies that Thursday afternoon.
When second-grader Luke is at the books, his favorite subjects are science and math. Assembling the props for the shoot was also half the fun! We discovered that morning that our copy of The Night Before Christmas had disappeared, so a phone call was made to The Book Loft of German Village, that iconic bookstore on South Third Street, and they generously loaned us a (much nicer looking) copy of the Christmas classic.
