Editor’s note: Because of the coronavirus pandemic, many camp organizers are either moving their 2020 summer camps to online offerings or canceling their programs for this year. The state of Ohio declared May 14 that day camps would be allowed to operate under specific guidelines as of May 31, so some camps are still taking place in person, though with special precautions. This list, part of our 2020 Columbus Parent Summer Camp Guide, was accurate at the time our Spring issue came out in early March, but many camp plans have changed since, so be sure to contact the organizer of any camp you have already enrolled in or are hoping to sign up for to confirm whether it is still taking place.

Capriccio Youth Choir: CYC Summer Institute
Ages served: 7-18
Dates/times: 7/21-7/23; full day (6+ hours)
Description: The Summer Institute is open to any singer entering grades 2-12 who wants to explore choral music to enhance their skills. Participants enhance music reading skills, ensemble and individual singing confidence, and explore a varied vocal repertoire. Camp ends with an “informance” for families.
Cost: $75 CYC singer, $95 non-CYC singer

Columbus Children’s Choir: Elementary Summer Singers

Description: Singers of all experience levels entering grades 3-5 develop vocal technique and musicianship skills in an engaging setting. Camp includes interactive experiences with music reading, movement and drumming, and ends with a performance for family and friends.

Creative Strings Youth Workshop: Creative Strings Workshop
Ages served: 10-17

Description: Creative Strings Workshop is an opportunity for middle and high school string instrument students to study jazz, pop, Latin, folk, fiddle and other styles in a relaxed, small group setting with some of the top performers in the world, right here in Central Ohio.

The Ohio State University School of Music: Middle School Concert Band Academy
Ages served: Entering grades 7-9

Description: This program is designed for middle-level concert band musicians to enrich their understanding of music in a noncompetitive and positive program. Activities include ensemble rehearsals, instrument-specific master classes and two electives (improvisation, jazz introduction, world drumming and ukulele).

The Ohio State University School of Music: Morning String Student Workshop

Description: This daily workshop offers motivational, hands-on training in technique and aural skill development, participation in chamber music ensembles and large orchestra rehearsals in a noncompetitive atmosphere. All students should have at least one year of playing experience.

Otterbein University: Otterbein Summer Music Experience

Description: The camp gives students an introduction to college music training. Daily one-on-one instrumental or vocal lessons will be combined with opportunities to play or sing in ensembles. Individual lessons and different chamber music opportunities will round out the experience.

Vaud-Villities Productions: Vaud-Villities Youth Show Camp
Ages served: 6-17

Description: Take the stage in a Broadway-style show, through hands-on experiences in song, dance, costuming and staging. There is a Master Class for seniors and a showcase performance for family at the conclusion of camp. Juniors ages 6-10 meet in the morning and seniors ages 11-17 in the afternoon.
