A top teen volunteer, COSI's new exhibit, Legoland comes to Columbus and remaking Ten Pin Alley
A Gahanna teenager has been named a distinguished finalist in the 2018 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, a national effort that honors student volunteers. Vanessa McCoy, 18, a senior at Ohio Connections Academy, was honored for her volunteer work with a Thanksgiving food drive organized by The Byron Saunders Foundation. The awards program, which recognizes two top volunteers from each state and the District of Columbia as well as a group of finalists, is run by Prudential Financial and the National Association of Secondary School Principals. McCoy is among 10 Ohio honorees.
Ten Pin Alley in Hilliard has reopened after an extensive renovation and expansion. The 37,000-square-foot venue now has laser tag, bocce, an arcade, 24 bowling lanes and more kitchen and restaurant space. The two-story laser tag area, Steampunk H20, has a funky underwater-sea-creatures-meet-machines theme. A new Heart & Bowl program will donate 2 percent of total sales this year to Action for Children, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Ohio and the Hilliard Food Pantry. Visitors can see the first companion exhibition to the American Museum of Natural History Dinosaur Gallery at COSI starting March 3. “Traveling the Silk Road: Ancient Pathways to the Modern World” takes visitors on a journey along the first international highway, stopping at four major points along the ancient trading route between Asia and the Middle East. The AMNH exhibit is scheduled to run through Sept. 3.
Legoland Discovery Center Columbus made quite a first impression when a front-end loader dropped 90,000 bricks onto the Easton splash pad at a Feb. 6 groundbreaking. The new $10 million attraction, expected to open this fall, will occupy 36,000 square feet in the Station building. The venue, among 12 LDCs open or in development in North America and 22 worldwide, will be owned and operated by Merlin Entertainments. Go to ColumbusParent.com to see the video and learn more.
