The CSO and TBDBITL, state fair youth concerts, jazz for kids, CCT takes on Cinderella and JoJo Siwa comes to Coumbus

CSO AND TBDBITL

Treat your kids to the combined sound of two of the city’s beloved musical institutions: the Columbus Symphony Orchestra and the Ohio State University Marching Band. This is a highlight of every Picnic with the Pops season. It’s a perfect opportunity to spread a blanket and enjoy a summertime meal or a snack (bring food or purchase some on-site) and stir those fall football feelings at the same time. General admission lawn tickets for ages 3-14 are $10; adult tickets are $30. The concerts are set for July 26-27.

If you’d prefer something specifically geared for kids and families, the symphony’s Popcorn Pops season features “Movies & Maracas” on July 19. Tickets are $10 for children, $12 for adults. This is the final Popcorn Pops of the year.

ALL OHIO

While the Ohio State Fair has grown in a laudable attempt to appeal to more people, there is still a focus on young people. Two highlights are the All-Ohio State Fair Band and All-Ohio State Fair Choir, featuring some of the state’s brightest young musicians. The ensembles provide daily entertainment throughout the fair, but they also get time to shine on the stage inside the Celeste Center. That combined concert, which is free with fair admission, will take place July 28.

For fans of the Kidz Bop franchise, note that its World Tour 2019 will stop at the Celeste Center on July 24. Tickets are $20.

JOJO COMES TO TOWN

Nickelodeon star JoJo Siwa (if you haven’t seen her on TV, you’ve probably seen her on YouTube) is on the road with her D.R.E.A.M. tour, bringing her sass and effervescence straight to the people. The tour stops July 31 at the Schottenstein Center, where she’ll be joined by special guests The Belles. Tickets start at $36.50.

SUMMERTIME SWING

Jazz Arts Group’s summer JazZoo concerts aren’t specifically aimed at families, but they’re still a good opportunity to let kids dip their toes into grown-up art. This summer’s JazZoo series kicks off this month with concerts July 12 and 26. Tickets are $35 and include zoo admission.

If you prefer afternoon jazz tailored to young audience members, the CJO’s summer PBJ & Jazz concert series hits the right notes. The free concerts are held one Saturday a month through September in the often-overlooked Topiary Park. This month’s installment takes place July 13 and features the Bobby Floyd Trio and Dwight Adams.
