Seasonal offerings include the CSO's Holiday Pops, Rudolph, 'Messiah,' 'Elf on the Shelf,' 'The Nutcracker' and two shows each from Columbus Children's Theatre and CATCO is Kids.

This is a busy winter for the city’s resident children’s theater troupes. Columbus Children’s Theatre starts the season with a new take on a classic tale. The regional premiere of Mike Kenney’s “Rapunzel” takes the company’s Park Street Theatre stage Dec. 5-22. Next, CCT presents the oh-so-cool “Pete the Cat” from Jan. 17 through Feb. 1. Daytime tickets for both shows start at $10.

CATCO is Kids marks the holiday season with the heartwarming “A Winnie the Pooh Christmas Tail,” in which all of your favorites look for Eeyore’s missing tail. The show takes place Dec. 6-22. “Dr. Seuss’s The Cat in the Hat” brings offbeat adventure onstage Jan. 10-26. Tickets start at $12 for both shows.

The Columbus Symphony Orchestra’s annual Holiday Pops concerts fill the Ohio Theatre stage with a cast of more than 300 musicians, singers, dancers and characters, including the Columbus Children’s Choir, dancers from the BalletMet Academy, narrator Steven Crawford and, of course, the Columbus Symphony, CSO Chorus and Santa Claus himself. And the audience is invited to sing along. Holiday Pops will be presented four times Dec. 6-8. Tickets are $25 to $78.

I was about 12 when I went to my first singalong “Messiah.” It wasn’t in Columbus, so I didn’t get to sing along with ProMusica Chamber Orchestra then. It’s a cool experience, joining a professional orchestra to sing a classic piece as the audience is transformed into a choir. The program takes place Dec. 13 at the Southern Theatre. Tickets are $24.

Hermey, Yukon Cornelius, the Bumble and a certain red-nosed reindeer will come alive in the touring production of “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer: The Musical,” Dec. 13-14 (three shows) at the Palace Theatre. The characters you love and the songs you can sing from memory are off the screen and on the stage in a show that celebrates uniqueness and the misfit in everyone. Tickets start at $25.50.
