Some Central Ohio families are advocating for change—and yours can, too.

In some ways, it feels like the country has never been more polarized. Social media is filled with posts where one political party insults the other. Pro-mask parents face off against anti-maskers. And the killing of George Floyd at the hands of police escalated racial tensions and led to nationwide protests against social injustice and police brutality, which in turn led to sometimes bitter divides over the importance of the Black Lives Matter movement.

Amid the pandemic, especially, we should be striving more than ever for unity and equality. So far, the progress has come mostly in baby steps.

But in 2020, issues of diversity and equality are topics no parent can ignore. Central Ohio is an amazing, multicultural community filled with limitless potential. Sadly, many of our children will never reach theirs if there is not a push to change stereotypes and outdated perceptions of many of our neighbors.

For our Fall issue cover story, freelance writer Shannon Shelton Miller spoke with local families, diversity advocates and consultants to find out what parents can do to educate their children about equality and acceptance. It’s an enlightening read, and some of their answers may surprise you.

That story is accompanied by a powerful first-person essay from Columbus author Terreece M. Clarke, who writes about the painful realities of raising a Black family in 2020. It’s a true must-read.

On a lighter note, this issue also includes the results of our Columbus Parent 2020 Family Faves reader survey. For the 10th year, we asked parents for their opinions on the best family-friendly businesses, dining, activities and events in Central Ohio. Our results package recognizes 40 winners, 81 runners-up and 131 honorable mentions in a wide variety of categories, from pizza and ice cream to bookshops, clothing stores, parks and more.
