Earbuds are a growing cause of hearing loss in young people.

In case you haven’t heard, May 31 is Save Your Hearing Day. Hearing loss probably isn’t something must young people worry about, but if they use headphones or earbuds, they should. More than 1 billion people ages 12-35 are at risk of hearing loss because of exposure to noise in a recreational setting, according to the World Health Organization.

Twenty-three percent of people who use electronic devices at high volume experience hearing problems, according to a WHO study. Researchers predict that young adults who frequently use headphones should prepare to deal with ringing in their ears and hearing loss later in life.
