At this time of year we are reminded to pay tribute to the veterans. The City of Ashland Memorial Day Committee had chosen to honor the Ashland Veterans Honor Guard this year as parade marshals. Due to the pandemic and the cancellation of the annual Memorial Day parade, the Ashland Veterans Honor Guard was honored at the service at Ashland Cemetery.
The Ashland Veterans Honor Guard is comprised of volunteers from the veterans organizations in Ashland. They participate in many parades, events and ceremonies.
The most common service they provide is at funerals of fellow veterans, where they perform and fold and present an American flag to the next of kin, perform a 21-gun salute and play taps.
Like many of us, they have families and friends to do things with. Instead, they are sacrificing their time to stand in sweltering heat, rain or cold-windy cemeteries seeing the veteran has a proper military funeral.
Those serving on the Ashland Veterans Honor Guard, under the direction of David Harry, are Lonnie Hinton, BJ Long, Terry Greene, Richard Stotler, Roger Shopbell, Jim Ropp, Gregory Hockenberry, Richard Rafeld, Roger Hazen, Andrew Leidigh, Gary Kohn, Alvin Thomas, Richard Yenni, Tim Warrick, David Brown, Charles Schaub, Bob Hesson and Cindy Belanger
The next time you see them at an event, give them a heartfelt salute and thank them.
