This archway will lead to the new Scotts Miracle-Gro Foundation Children’s Garden.

Thirteen months from now, leaders of the Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Gardens aim to play a significant part in getting Central Ohio kids back outdoors.

The Scotts Miracle-Gro Foundation Children’s Garden, announced April 24, is expected to open in May 2018. A ceremonial groundbreaking for the 2-acre area will be held April 27.

According to the announcement, the children’s garden will connect kids, art and nature through 16 different experiences, including organized activities as well as spaces for unstructured play. The Playhouse Garden will offer a puppet stage, playhouse and chances to engage role playing, while a 15-foot sandstone bluff inspired by the Hocking Hills lends a geological flair.

A Canopy Walk, with stations 10 and 13 feet high, is accessible to all visitors via rope bridges and features benches and a hammock lounge. There also will be an education pavilion as well as areas for kids to dig, explore woods and a wetland and learn about gardening.
