Time for school already
I can't believe there are only a few short weeks left before school is in session.
Part of me wants to scream, "Hallelujah!" and another part of me just wants to sob because summer (my favorite time of year) has almost come to an end.
My oldest is going to be in ninth grade and I have to admit, I'm just a wee bit freaked out by that. Did I give him all the life lessons he needs to survive the hormonal jungle that is high school? Does he have the wherewithal to make the right choices? I believe I'm in the "letting go" phase of my mothering with him. And I don't like it.
I remember his first day of kindergarten. He had on his little Gap jeans and his giant Pokemon backpack. He looked too small to be getting on the school bus, which looked like it was as long as a city block. I worried he would miss me too much and be sad at school. On the contrary. He came home with new friends, new ideas and new words he learned on the school bus. Oh boy.
This month, we take a hard look at not just the school bus, but the bullies that may be on board-and on the playground-and what you and your child can do about them. Cooking is on the agenda this month, too, with meals your kids can help prepare, plus 20 fun packed-lunch ideas. Meeting with your child's teacher soon? You may need a 411 on IEPs. Our comprehensive article and glossary of terms will empower you to ask all the right questions. And finally, our annual Guide to the Arts lists the many programs available to central Ohio kids, including dance, fine arts, theater, music and more.
Take these last few weeks before school and savor what's left of the summer with your family. Don't feel guilty for not doing housework. Unlike children, housework never goes away.
