Hands On Craft: Sparkling Snowflakes

Olivera Bratich

Add a little sparkle to your house this winter with a family craft project that also improves young children’s fine motor skills!

WHAT YOU NEED

*4 craft sticks (per snowflake)

*Blue or white acrylic paint

*Sequins

*Ribbon

*Tacky glue

*Tweezers

HOW YOU DO IT

1. Paint each craft stick blue or white. Let dry.

2. Hold a stick vertically, painted side up. Put a dot of glue in the center of the stick and layer another stick across it, making a cross shape. Set aside.

3. Put a dot of glue in the center of another stick, painted side up. Layer a second stick on top, making an “X” shape.

4. Put a dot of glue in the center of the cross and lay the “X” on top. Let dry and wiggle to make sure the stack is secure. Reglue if needed.

5. Put a dot of glue in the center of the snowflake. Use tweezers to pick up a sequin and glue it to the center. Continue adding glue dots and sequins to the entire snowflake. Using tweezers in craft projects is great fine-motor-skill practice for young children. (Tip: If you don’t have sequins, this project is also adorable when made with buttons, pompoms, dots of glitter glue—just about any tiny thing!) Let the project dry.

6. Cut a length of ribbon about 8 to 10 inches long. Turn the snowflake over to the unpainted side. Make a loop with the ribbon and glue it to the middle of the snowflake.

7. Hang around the house for some sparkly winter fun!

This shimmering snowflake requires only basic supplies and helps build fine motor skills.
